Introducing the Downtown Jacket (full pattern). A modern design, perfect for layering, this jacket features a two-piece sleeve with an exaggerated cuff.
WATCH THE VIDEO to see what's in this sewing pattern.
This listing contains the full pattern - with pattern pieces for both Regular & Roomy Fit. The regular fit is ideal for wearing over light layers, while the roomy fit offers extra space for layering over our long sleeved sweaters, dresses & tops without being oversized.
Key features include the sleek two-piece sleeve with exaggerated cuff, easy collar & integrated placket, back yoke with a burrito finish, and plenty of topstitching throughout. Choose between a topstitched or pleated back for added ease.
Available in 3 lengths, with exaggerated patch pockets, optional side splits, and your choice of buttons or snaps. Short sleeve options are also included.
Visit here for just the Regular Fit. Visit here for just the Roomy Fit.
This pattern includes pattern pieces for both the Regular & Roomy Fit Jackets. This includes front, backs, yoke, 2pc long sleeve, short sleeves, collar, cuffs & FBA fronts. Collars, sleeves & cuffs can be swapped between patterns. Shared pieces include patch pocket & button template.
We guide you through, step by step with our user friendly tutorial.
What’s the Difference Between Regular & Roomy Fits?
Body Fit:
Back Design:
Collar: Regular is slightly narrower, but both collars share the same neckline and can be used interchangeably on either fit.
Cuffs: Regular and Roomy cuffs differ slightly, but both fit either sleeve. Note that sleeve length will vary slightly depending on the cuff chosen.
2-Piece Sleeve Fit: The Roomy sleeve has a wider circumference but works with either body fit.
Short Sleeve: Regular Fit has a narrower top arm and hem measurement, but both short sleeves can be used with either fit.
Mix & Match: Most pattern pieces (sleeves, cuffs, collar, pockets, placket interfacing, and button template) are interchangeable between the Regular and Roomy fits. The body (front, back, yoke) should not be mixed between fits.
For more detailed guidance on mixing and matching, see the tutorial.

First time sewing a jacket, instructions are clear, easy to follow and work. Really enjoying wearing the jacket to all occasions and have had positive comments. Made in pin corduroy it goes with everything
I really liked the Downtown Jacket Pattern - I found the extensive instructions very detailed. The only thing I should have thought to double check was the sleeve length. Too short! But that can be adjusted if I use the pattern again.
The instructions could not be better. I made more of a coat than a jacket and taught myself how to line it (with the help of You Tube). I used a Vintage ‘70s pure woollen blanket with denim in the undercollar and back sleeves. I am taller so i will add some length to the sleeves on the next one. Looove the wide cuff, adds style for sure. 100% recommend follow the instructions and you’ll be right.
Not sewn for a while, but have just retired so I finally have time to address my fabric stash. I'd seen several Lifting Pins and Needles variations on this versatile jacket, including a wool boucle one for the UK climate, so this was a good staple pattern to buy. I've mostly sewn Big4 patterns before so what a pleasure it was to have such clear instructions and lots of photos to follow. For this jacket, I used a medium weight cotton from my stash, regular fit, size 12, length 2. It's beautifully drafted and fits me perfectly, no adjustments needed. Very impressed and will definitely do another one...or two.. or three.
Love the simplicity of the pattern. Excellent instructions with photos
