Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome! Whether you’re brand new to PDF sewing patterns or a long-time Pattern Emporium customer, here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.

About Pattern Emporium

What is Pattern Emporium?

Pattern Emporium is an Australian independent sewing pattern company creating modern PDF sewing patterns for women around the world.

Our patterns are all about clothes you'll actually love wearing: contemporary, relaxed styles with plenty of options so you can make them your own.

Each pattern is designed and developed in Australia and thoroughly tested by sewists across our size range before release.

Are your patterns beginner friendly?

Yes. Our tutorials are designed to guide you through the sewing process with clear step-by-step instructions, photos, diagrams and helpful tips along the way.

If you're completely new to PDF sewing patterns, start with our Getting Started Guide →

What makes Pattern Emporium patterns different?

We're all about modern, wearable clothes with plenty of options built into each pattern. Many patterns include a choice of necklines, sleeves, lengths and style variations, so you can create very different looks from the one pattern.

We also put a huge amount of work into our tutorials, fit guidance and pattern testing, and show our designs on real sewists across a range of sizes, heights and ages so you can see how they look on different bodies.

About Our Patterns

Are your patterns digital or paper?

All Pattern Emporium patterns are digital PDF sewing patterns. Nothing is posted to you.

After purchase, your pattern files are available to download from your Pattern Library.

How do PDF sewing patterns work?

After purchase, download your pattern files to your device. You can then print the Print-at-Home file, have the A0 file printed at a copy shop, or use the Projector file where included.

Our Getting Started Guide → walks you through the whole process.

I’ve never used a PDF pattern before. Is it hard?

It can feel a little different at first if you're used to traditional tissue patterns, but most sewists are surprised how quickly they get the hang of it.

Many customers end up preferring PDF patterns because you can:

  • Access patterns instantly
  • Reprint sizes anytime
  • Print only the pages you need
  • Use layers to hide sizes you don't need

If you're new to PDF patterns, our Getting Started Guide → walks you through the whole process, from downloading your pattern through to printing, preparing and sewing.

What is included in my download?

Depending on the pattern, your download may include:

  • Tutorial PDF
  • Print-at-Home pattern
  • A0 Copy Shop pattern
  • Projector pattern
  • Read Me / Read This First files where required

Most patterns also include size layers. A small number of our classics do not include layers or projector files.

You'll find the exact files included with each pattern under Pattern Details on the product page.

Can I print the tutorial?

Yes, but our tutorials are designed to be read digitally on a computer, tablet or phone.

They contain lots of photographs, diagrams and information, so we recommend keeping the tutorial open on your device while you sew rather than printing the whole thing.

You can, of course, print individual pages if there are particular instructions you'd like beside you while sewing.

Patterns released from September 2026 also include Text-Only Instructions at the back of the tutorial. These are designed to be easy to print if you prefer to have the sewing steps beside you while you sew.

Pattern Library & Downloads

Where do I find my patterns?

Your purchased patterns are stored in your Pattern Library.

  1. Select Download My Patterns from the website menu.
  2. Sign in when prompted.
  3. Select the pink Enter Your Pattern Library Here button.
  4. Choose the pattern you'd like to access.
  5. Select the file you'd like to download.

How do I sign into my account?

Pattern Emporium uses Shopify's secure customer accounts, so you don't need a password to sign in.

Enter your email address on the sign-in page and Shopify will send a one-time code to your email. Enter that code to sign in.

I can’t sign into my account. What should I do?

If the sign-in page isn't loading or working correctly, first make sure your web browser is up to date. Older browser versions may no longer display newer Shopify account features correctly.

Try:

  • Updating Chrome or Safari to the latest version
  • Closing and reopening your browser after updating
  • Opening a Private / Incognito window
  • Signing in on a phone or tablet

If you can sign in on another device, your Pattern Emporium account is fine and the issue is with the original browser or device.

If you still can't sign in, please Contact Us →

Can’t see the pink "Enter Your Pattern Library Here" button?

Don't worry. Your Pattern Library and patterns are still there.

Older web browsers or some browser extensions and ad blockers may not display this section of your account correctly.

Try:

  • Update your browser: Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome or Safari.
  • Try a Private / Incognito window: If the button appears there, a browser extension or ad blocker may be hiding it.
  • Try another device: If possible, sign in on a phone or tablet.
  • Hard refresh the page: Ctrl + F5 on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac.

How do I download and save my patterns?

Open your Pattern Library, select your pattern and download the files you need to your device.

Once downloaded, your PDFs are saved on your device. You don't need to download them again every time you want to read your tutorial or print your pattern.

For step-by-step help, see our Downloading & Printing Guide →

I downloaded my pattern. Where did my files go?

Your downloaded files are usually saved automatically in your device's Downloads folder.

  • iPhone / iPad: Open the Files app and look in Downloads.
  • Android / Chromebook: Open Files or My Files and look in Downloads.
  • Mac / Windows: Open your Downloads folder.

Once you've found your files, you can move them into a folder of your choice to keep them organised.

For more help, see our Downloading & Printing Guide →

I can’t find my patterns

This is often caused by purchases being made using different email addresses.

Please:

  • Check which email address was used at checkout
  • Log out and back in again
  • Type your email manually instead of relying on autofill
  • Double-check that autofill hasn't inserted another email address

If needed, we can help merge your accounts. Contact Us →

I haven’t received my download email

Don't worry. Everything you need is available right here on our website.

You can access your purchased patterns at any time through your Pattern Library.

You'll also find all the information you need to get started here:

If you can't find your order or patterns because you may have used a different or misspelled email address, please Contact Us → and we can help.

My pattern won’t download

First try downloading the file using Chrome or Safari.

Avoid Microsoft Edge, Samsung Internet and the browser inside the Facebook app, as these can sometimes cause issues with PDF pattern files and layers.

If it still won't download, try another browser or device.

See our Downloading & Printing Guide → for more help.

I’ve used all my downloads. What do I do?

Don't worry. If you've reached the download limit for a file, please Contact Us → and we'll reset it for you.

Once you've downloaded a file, save it to your device and open that saved copy next time rather than downloading it again.

Printing & Pattern Files

How do I print my pattern at home?

Use the Print-at-Home pattern file and follow the Page Printing Guide in your tutorial so you only print the pages you need.

Print from a computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader, or use the Sewsy app on a phone, tablet or Chromebook.

For the complete process and recommended printer settings, see our Downloading & Printing Guide →

What program or app should I use to print my pattern?

Computer or laptop: Use the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Phone, tablet or Chromebook: Use the Sewsy app, available from your device's app store.

These allow you to use the size layers and print your PDF sewing pattern correctly.

How do I print just my size?

Most Pattern Emporium patterns include size layers, allowing you to hide the sizes you don't need before printing.

You can leave one size visible or select multiple sizes if you're multi-sizing.

Keep the Pattern Info layer selected too, as this contains important pattern information and markings.

See our step-by-step guide →

Do I need to print every page?

No. Most patterns include different styles and options, so you only need to print the pages containing the pattern pieces you're using.

Check the Page Printing Guide in your tutorial before printing.

Can I print from my phone, iPad or Chromebook?

Yes. Use the Sewsy app to open and print your pattern.

Sewsy allows you to select size layers and print PDF sewing patterns correctly from these devices.

You can download Sewsy from the app store for your device.

I can’t find the Layers icon in Adobe Reader

Adobe occasionally changes the Reader interface, so the Layers panel may not be where you expect it.

First, make sure you downloaded your pattern using Chrome or Safari. Downloading PDF pattern files through Microsoft Edge or Samsung Internet can flatten the layers, which means the Layers panel won't be available.

If you downloaded through Edge or Samsung Internet, download a fresh copy of the pattern using Chrome or Safari, then open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

If your file still has its layers, our Downloading & Printing Guide → shows you where to find the Layers panel.

What is an A0 file?

An A0 file is a large-format pattern file designed to be printed by a copy shop or pattern printing service instead of printing and joining A4 / US Letter pages at home.

Our A0 pattern pages are set up at 84.1 × 118.9cm and should be printed at 100% / Actual Size with no scaling.

Where can I get my A0 pattern printed?

You can use a local copy shop or a specialist PDF sewing pattern printing service.

A printer familiar with PDF sewing patterns will understand size layers, scale and selecting only the pages you need.

See the A0 Copy Shop section of our Downloading & Printing Guide →

Do I need to print every A0 page?

Not necessarily. Some patterns include separate A0 pages for different styles, lengths or fitting options.

Check the A0 printing information in your tutorial before sending your pattern to the printer. You may also have a Read Me / Read This First file with additional information.

What is a projector file?

A projector file allows you to project the pattern pieces directly onto your fabric instead of printing them.

Pattern Emporium projector files include open pattern pieces, size layers and large, easy-to-read pattern information.

What does “BLK” mean on projector files?

BLK simply means the projector file uses black size lines instead of coloured size lines.

Can I get a printed pattern posted to me?

No. Pattern Emporium patterns are digital PDF sewing patterns and we don't currently offer printed paper patterns.

You can print at home, have the A0 file professionally printed, or use the Projector file where included.

Sizing & Fit

How do I choose my size?

Choose your Pattern Emporium size using your body measurements, rather than the ready-to-wear size you normally buy.

Each tutorial includes a sizing guide specific to that pattern, showing you which measurements to use and how to choose your size.

I’m between sizes. What should I do?

If your measurement falls within the measurement range shown for a size, you are not between sizes. Choose that size.

Our size charts show a range of measurements for each size rather than one exact measurement. So even if your measurement is close to the top or bottom of that range, it still belongs to that size.

If different body measurements place you in different sizes, that's something different. Follow the sizing guidance in your pattern tutorial, as you may need to use a combination of sizes (multi-sizing).

Do I need to make adjustments?

Making adjustments is a normal part of sewing for your own body. Sewing patterns are drafted to a standard set of measurements and proportions, but our bodies don't all match those proportions.

This can become particularly noticeable as our bodies change with age. For example, changes in the shape and position of the seat can affect how pants fit through the crotch, and a back crotch scoop may improve the fit.

Your pattern tutorial includes fit and sizing guidance specific to that design. You'll also find step-by-step help for many common adjustments in our Pattern Adjustments →

What cup size are your patterns drafted for?

We don't draft using traditional cup sizes.

For tops and dresses, size selection begins with your upper bust measurement, taken without a bra. Each pattern then includes its own sizing and fit guidance to help determine whether you may need a Full Bust Adjustment.

Some patterns also include optional FBA pattern pieces to make this easier.

Always follow the Sizing & Fit section of the individual pattern tutorial, as the recommendation can vary depending on the style and amount of ease in the design.

Fabric

What fabric should I use?

Always start with the fabric recommendations for the individual pattern.

You'll find fabric information on the product page and in the tutorial, including the types of fabric we recommend and, where relevant, fabrics we don't recommend using.

Fabric choice can make a big difference to how your finished garment hangs, feels and fits, so don't skip this bit.

Can I use a different fabric than the pattern recommends?

You can experiment, but changing the fabric can also change the finished result.

Drape, weight, structure and stretch all affect how a garment hangs and fits. A soft, drapey fabric can behave very differently from a firm or structured fabric even when you use exactly the same pattern.

For the most predictable result, choose a fabric with similar characteristics to those recommended for the pattern.

Why don't you recommend quilting cotton for your patterns?

We are not saying don’t. We're simply saying we don’t recommend it. Here's why.

Quilting cotton is designed to hold its shape and build durability for patchworks and quilts. It stands away from the body rather than draping softly, making it a poor choice clothing where drape & softness are recommended.

We recommend against using quilting cotton for our patterns because of its lack of drape and stiff weave, which alter how a piece of clothing hangs and moves on the body.

Where can I find fabric inspiration?

Our Fabric Edit posts explore how different fabrics behave and how fabric choice can change the finished look of your garment.

You'll find them in Pattern Resources →

Sewing

Do your patterns include sewing instructions?

Yes. Every pattern includes a detailed tutorial with step-by-step sewing instructions, photographs, diagrams and helpful tips.

Patterns released from September 2026 also include a Quick Sew page for experienced sewists who want a quick overview, plus Text-Only Instructions at the back of the tutorial.

Do you have video sewing tutorials?

We don't provide a complete video sew-along for every pattern, but you'll find helpful sewing and technique videos on our YouTube channel.

These are separate from our What's In The Pattern videos, which are designed to show you what's included in a pattern rather than teach the full sewing process.

What are your “What’s In The Pattern” videos?

These videos walk you through the styles, options and design features included in a pattern and often include fabric and styling inspiration.

They're a great way to see what's included before you choose what you'd like to sew.

Can I hack or mash Pattern Emporium patterns?

Absolutely.

We've put together a collection of Pattern Emporium Pattern Hacks and Pattern Mashes, including ideas for combining pattern pieces and creating different looks from patterns you already own.
