♥ WHAT THESE ARE NOT
These are not barrel leg jeans. There’s no fitted upper section, no structured waistband and no knee darts creating that more extreme shape you may have seen.
Instead, this is a softer take on the barrel leg—thanks to a forward-positioned side seam, a gently curved outer leg seam and a subtle taper to the ankle. You can also add more taper if you’d like.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS CHART: View the fabric chart.
TRIMS: Elastic for the waistband - 2.5cm (1”) or 4cm (1.5”).
SUPPLIES: Interfacing for the top of side leg & back pockets.
SUITABLE FABRICS:
FABRICS WITH A LITTLE BODY
FABRICS WITH DRAPE
FABRICS TO AVOID
You may be tempted to use thick fabrics, but thick, bulky or stiff fabrics will give you bulky pants. We strongly recommend avoiding them.
Thicker fabrics, including 100% cotton anything, will make the pants feel bigger.
Stop & think for a moment about a pull on elastic waistband: it needs to be wide enough to pull up over your butt, which naturally means gathers at the waist. Can you see how a thicker fabric will make a bulky waistband, increasing volume at the waist?
These are not the structured barrel leg jeans you may have seen in stores, with fitted waistband & zipped front. Bulky denim, corduroy and other stiff fabrics, in the Making Moves pant, will create too much bulk over the whole pant.

I regularly use size 12 clothing, but when I sew clothes using Vogue patterns or Butterick, I increase the sizing to size 14. When I cut out the size 14 for the barrel pant, they are voluminous! Sadly, after assembling them with the pockets at the hip, they are difficult to take in, so I will finish them off, and send them to a thrift shop. So depressing.
Hi Shirley. I'm sorry to hear your first pair wasn't what you expected. Unfortunately you've size up several sizes. Sewing pattern sizing isn't standard between designers or countries.
The size 14 you selected would actually be around three sizes larger than our recommended starting size based on our body measurement chart. That's why we always recommend choosing your size using the Pattern Emporium measurement chart and step-by-step sizing instructions, rather than comparing sizes with other pattern brands.
Love these trousers, glad I made a toile beforehand because I down sized after. Really pleased with how they turned out!
I made these pants for my daughter (with the low rise waist) and myself (with the higher waist), hers in a poplin and mine in a cotton fabric. We're both delighted with them. The pattern is easy to follow and it's so good to have the option to just print one size!
Made up in a soft cotton voile these are light, comfy and easy wear. Sewing instructions are excellent and I appreciate the additional tutorials on fitting adjustments that are on the web. I will use them for improvements on the fit for the next make.
I appreciate there is so much online help. I didn't like the waistband directions and my batik fabric is just too stiff. Really need soft material to get the right look. The directions made the side pocket more difficult than necessary. I think I will lessen the barrel shape even more on my next try.
Hi there. Thank you for your review. Fabric choice really does make a big difference with the Making Moves Pants. As outlined in the fabric section of the tutorial, fabrics with drape or some softness will give a very different result to stiffer fabrics such as batiks. I'm glad you're already planning another pair and hope your next version is exactly what you're looking for.
