The Making Moves Pants are a pull-on pant with subtle barrel leg shaping & optional cargo pockets. Click on the 'Features' tab below to find out more.
If you've ever wanted to make a pair of barrel leg pants but were nervous about the extreme shaping, these are the pants for you. They’re like wide leg pants and tapered pants had a baby.
All of our patterns are digital pdf sewing pattern.

♥ WHAT ARE BARREL LEG PANTS LIKE ANYWAY?
♥ WHY WE THINK YOU’LL LOVE THEM?

♥ WHAT THESE ARE NOT
These are not barrel leg jeans. There’s no fitted upper section, no structured waistband and no knee darts creating that more extreme shape you may have seen.
Instead, this is a softer take on the barrel leg—thanks to a forward-positioned side seam, a gently curved outer leg seam and a subtle taper to the ankle. You can also add more taper if you’d like.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS CHART: View the fabric chart.
TRIMS: Elastic for the waistband - 2.5cm (1”) or 4cm (1.5”).
SUPPLIES: Interfacing for the top of side leg & back pockets.
SUITABLE FABRICS:
FABRICS WITH A LITTLE BODY
FABRICS WITH DRAPE
FABRICS TO AVOID
You may be tempted to use thick fabrics, but thick, bulky or stiff fabrics will give you bulky pants. We strongly recommend avoiding them.
Thicker fabrics, including 100% cotton anything, will make the pants feel bigger.
Stop & think for a moment about a pull on elastic waistband: it needs to be wide enough to pull up over your butt, which naturally means gathers at the waist. Can you see how a thicker fabric will make a bulky waistband, increasing volume at the waist?
These are not the structured barrel leg jeans you may have seen in stores, with fitted waistband & zipped front. Bulky denim, corduroy and other stiff fabrics, in the Making Moves pant, will create too much bulk over the whole pant.

Apr 8, '26 - A0 copy shop file. Length labels & references fixed. Correct = short, reg & tall.
I have made two pair and plan on making more. Linen fabric works so well for these hot Canadian days. A real winner for me.
I absolutely love these pants! The fit was great and the directions were very good, I have never sewed a pattern with downloading and printing the directions and pattern pieces. I'm old school, been sewing for 42 years! The online directions with photos were very good, a new sewist could do very well with it.
Highly reccomend the pattern. I'm going to make more in different fabrics, I used 100% linen, they are gorgeous! Now sewing the popover dress!
I had the pattern/instructions printed at my local printing place and could not believe the amount of sheets that are completely irrelevant to the instructions.
Also when I was taping the pieces together the top of the pant front does not line up for the small sized!!
Hi Shirley, I'm sorry to hear you had trouble.
To give our makers flexibility, we provide separate files for different purposes: the Tutorial, the Print at Home pattern, and a dedicated A0 Copy Shop pattern. It sounds like the Tutorial and the Print at Home files were both sent to your printer. Because we design our tutorials to be highly detailed for digital screen viewing, printing them out does result in a lot of unnecessary paper!
For large-format printing services, the separate A0 Copy Shop file is the one to send, as it is laid out specifically for those large printers.
To help navigate this, page 8 of the Tutorial outlines exactly what each file is for. That page also covers printer scale settings, which is almost always why Print at Home pieces don't line up perfectly.
We want to help get your project back on track. Once you have the A0 file, if you still run into any issues, please reach out to us directly or join the Pattern Emporium Sewing Circle so we can help you troubleshoot
This pattern was my first foray back into making clothing after several decades. It was also my first pdf pattern experience. I was so impressed by how clear the instructions were. I also added a little cuff as well! And the pants came out beautifully. Can’t wait to make more of these!
This pattern is so easy to sew. The fit is nice and I absolutely love them! I will be sewing them over and over again. Also you can dress them up or wear them casually.
