Sewing Your Christmas Outfit 2025

Casual, dressed-up & ideas for every climate

Christmas looks a little different depending on where you live.

Some of us are melting our way through the day with mangoes and pavlova… while others are cosying up with hot chocolates and fairy lights.

Wherever you celebrate — and whatever the weather throws at you — sewing your own Christmas outfit is one of the loveliest parts of the season. It’s that moment of calm, creativity and “this one’s for me” in the middle of the chaos.

So here are a few ideas to spark your festive sew-jo for Christmas 2025.

If you're celebrating in summer

Think light, breezy and easy to wear from morning photos to the last plate of leftovers. Below we've got 2 woven fabric & 2 stretch fabric patterns or combos.

Go With The Flow Dress (woven fabric)

If you’re after something relaxed but still a little bit special for a warm Christmas, the Go With The Flow Dress is a lovely choice. The tent silhouette keeps it cool and floaty on hot days, and the drapey woven fabrics give it an easy dressed-up feel without trying. It’s one of those styles you can wear from morning photos through to the last of the leftovers.

Kate’s soft grey reptile version feels polished with its little strap detail, while Marnie gives it a subtle Christmas nod in green.

Mel’s neutral linen take shows just how effortlessly relaxed it can be and Amanda’s pink-red version brings all the summer cheer.

Vacay All Day Dress & Top (stretch fabric)

If you’re after effortless style, this one’s your girl. Cotton lycra, soft viscose jersey, a floaty maxi, or a fresh mini - it all works. Similar style to the Go With The Flow but one that you can whip up in no time.

The Vacay All Day Dress & Top sewing pattern is a dress you can wear from Christmas morning to the beach without skipping a beat, and then back again for Christmas lunch with plenty of room for that irresistible Christmas cake. You can sew it up very quickly & make a cool casual statement with your fabric.

Sherree made hers in DBP (double brushed poly) & wears it with the Smitten Jacket. Melanie has used a simply poly knit for hers with FOE (fold over elastic) trims. Steph's dress is made from Cotton Spandex & she's added in the shelf bra (you'll find it in the pattern hack section of the tutorial).

Turning Point Skirt (Stretch fabric)

The Turning Point Skirt sewing pattern's asymmetric hem adds that little twist without any extra effort. Pair it with a fitted tank or a soft blouse and you’ve got a modern, relaxed Christmas look.

Why are you going to love it as part of your Christmas outfit? It's super fast to make & has an elastic waist.

Below both Mel & Sophie are wearing the stretch One Shoulder Tank.

Kate is wearing the Lyrical Shirt & Meredith the Rise & Shop Sleeveless Top - both are for woven fabrics.

About Town Popover (Shirt or Dress)

One of this year’s most-loved releases, the About Town Popover Dress & Top is perfect for warm weather.

Sew it in linen, cotton, viscose or dobby and choose whether you want something breezy and oversized or more polished. The dress option is beautiful for Christmas Day.

Terri has sewn her stunning red dress, perfect for Christmas, in a cotton/poly dobby fabric. Kate's is in a beautiful b/w viscose print from Tessuti (Australia).

Easy Does It Skirt (woven fabrics)

If you’re after that “floaty but not fussy” kind of comfort, this one is perfect for a warm Christmas. The Easy Does It Skirt sewing pattern has a flat front waistband and elastic back, you get that smooth, polished look without the hassle of a zipper. It's pull-on perfection!

Dress it up. Dress it down. Add a side split if you’re feeling it. It’s one of those pieces you’ll reach for long after Christmas lunch is over.

From bold prints to soft linens, the Easy Does It Skirt shines in every fabric. Sally has made a gorgeous set with the Field Of Dreams Top, adding those beautifully feminine ruffles along the strap (included in this dress/top combo pattern). Jenny created her own mash-up with a Be Mine top featuring the About Town short cuffed sleeve.

Melanie & Kate both paired theirs with a matching About Town Popover top for the ultimate coordinated Christmas look. MarySarah mixed her skirt with a Spill The Tea blouse for a sophisticated print-on-print moment.

If you're celebrating in winter

Soft layers, cosy textures and outfits you can happily eat pudding in.

About Town Popover Top

For a winter Christmas outfit that feels relaxed but still put together, the long sleeve About Town Popover Top (and Dress) sewing pattern ticks all the boxes. The softly flared hemline gives you a bit of movement (and a little room for pudding), and the hip-length option pairs beautifully with your favourite trousers. It comes together quickly too — no buttons means it’s a nice, straightforward sew during a busy December.

Hello Gorgeous Puff Sleeve Tee

If Christmas at your place calls for a bit of drama without going dressy, the Hello Gorgeous Puff Sleeve Tee sewing pattern is such a good choice. It’s a semi-fitted t-shirt with gorgeous puff sleeves in four lengths — from a soft little short sleeve to a full long sleeve that’s perfect for cooler weather. It pairs beautifully with skirts, especially the Symphony Skirt, pictured below, if you love a matching set. Think effortless, modern and just the right amount of festive.

Walk Boldly Pants

The Walk Boldly Wide Leg Pants sewing pattern - your comfy-but-still-dressed-up trousers. They look sharp but are super comfy because... stretchyyyyyy. Ideal for cold-weather Christmas parties where you want style and stretch.

Sophie’s wearing her ponte Walk Boldly Pants with a True Romance bishop sleeve top in the perfect Christmas red. Melanie styled her animal-print ponte Walk Boldly Pants with a ready-to-wear jacket for an easy, polished look. Kate is in crepe scuba Walk Boldly Pants paired with a denim All In Shirt for a relaxed, modern mix.

Chasing Butterflies Top

If you’re celebrating a cooler Christmas and want something modern but still cosy, the Chasing Butterflies Top is such a good pick. The batwing shape gives it beautiful, intentional drape, and the roll neck is gorgeous in the right knit — soft, warm, and a little statement without trying too hard. It’s quick to sew, easy to wear, and looks incredible dressed up for Christmas with a skirt or wide-leg trousers. Choose your length, choose your neckline, and let the fabric do the talking.

Katie has chosen a sweater knit from Minerva for her roll neck Chasing Butterflies sweater. Allie has used a poly knit in the perfect Christmas red.

Sewing Sets for Christmas

One of this year’s biggest trends has been sets — and they’re brilliant for Christmas because they give you effortless polish and extra wear after the day is done.

Ideas:

Below, Rise & Shine Shell Top + Vacation Vibes Pants in linen.

Below, Keep It Simple Tee + Turning Point Handkerchief Hem Skirt - Steph’s belted look brings a little polish to this stretchy set, making it an easy Christmas outfit that feels dressed without being over the top.
Below, Chasing Butterflies or Keep It Simple Sweater + Slay All Day Skirt for a put together but comfy look.
Below, Meet You There Top + Getaway Shorts in a bold festive colour.
Below, All In Shirt + Getaways Shorts (perfect if Christmas = heatwave).

Matching or coordinating, sets are such a good way to feel put together without going full formal.

You get to make exactly what you feel good in — not what the shops think everyone wants.
Something that fits beautifully, suits your day, and makes you feel like yourself.

Whether you’re celebrating in 40 degrees (celsius) or minus three… I hope your handmade Christmas outfit brings you joy all season long.
