What’s the Difference Between Regular & Roomy Fits?

Body Fit:

  • Regular Fit: Smaller through the shoulders, chest, and hips. Designed to fit over lighter tops, t-shirts, and tanks. Similar fit to the Smitten Jacket.
  • Roomy Fit: Offers extra room through the body for easy layering without being oversized. Ideal for wearing over additional layers.

Back Design:

  • Topstitched Back – Regular: Available in lengths 1 & 2.
  • Topstitched Back – Roomy: Available in all lengths, providing more ease through the hips.
  • Pleated Back - Available in all 3 lengths in both regular & roomy fit. The pleat provides extra room over the hip/seat.

Collar: Regular is slightly narrower, but both collars share the same neckline and can be used interchangeably on either fit.

Cuffs: Regular and Roomy cuffs differ slightly, but both fit either sleeve. Note that sleeve length will vary slightly depending on the cuff chosen.

2-Piece Sleeve Fit: The Roomy sleeve has a wider circumference but works with either body fit.

Short Sleeve: Regular Fit has a narrower top arm and hem measurement, but both short sleeves can be used with either fit.

Mix & Match: Most pattern pieces (sleeves, cuffs, collar, pockets, placket interfacing, and button template) are interchangeable between the Regular and Roomy fits. The body (front, back, yoke) should not be mixed between fits.

For more detailed guidance on mixing and matching, see the tutorial.

PRINTING YOUR PDF SEWING PATTERNS.

At Pattern Emporium, most of our patterns include Print-at-Home, A0 Copy Shop, and Projector pattern files. Each listing specifies which formats are available for that particular pattern.

In each of our sewing pattern tutorials, you’ll find detailed information specific to that pattern's printing options.

1. Printer Settings. It's important to select the correct printer settings to ensure your pattern prints to the correct scale. You'll find printer specs in your tutorial &, for more detail, here on the website.

2. Page Printing Guide. You don’t need to print every page or size – just the ones you need. Our guide in the tutorial helps you identify exactly which pages to print.

3. Layout Summary. This shows what your print at home pattern will look like once assembled (taped together).

4. A0 Copy Shop Printing. What to ask for when printing at a copy shop. We recommend requesting plan printing and following the specs outlined above. Please note, printing at a copy shop is always going to be more expensive that printing at home.

For reliable A0 printing in Australia, we recommend Kristen at Dahlia Sewciety & Shelley at Plan Make Do.

In the United States, our customers recommend PDF Plotting.

Excellent Pattern!

I don't consider myself a very confident sewist. I have been sewing on and off for many years but often have not been completely happy with what I have made. I made this jacket with long sleeves in the crop length in corduroy for my daughter and it came out beautifully. The pattern was so easy to follow. I really appreciate the fact that each step is explained. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and have to scramble through youtube videos to figure a pattern out. Definitely see myself making this pattern several more times in the different variationss.

Great Pattern

This is the first PE pattern I've made, and it's been a very good experience. The range of style and fitting options included is so useful, and the instructions make everything super clear. I made the regular fit long length in a size 10 out of a medium weight denim; the fit is just right without modifications, and, with Kate's useful tips, my top stitching has never been so good! I've already got a lot of wear out of it, and immediately went on to a second version in the roomy fit out of a lovely dark olive green cotton twill, with a contrasting top stitching, so confident am I now that I have mastered that. I reduced the size of the collar slightly, as that is a better scale for me, and also switched the pockets to give me a small top pocket, and two medium sized pockets lower down. The jacket fits comfortably over winter layers, and I'm really pleased with it. I have a couple more PE patterns waiting to be made, and the way everything came together so easily with this jacket fills me with confidence as I approach them.

Hi Lynn. Thank you for your fantastic review! I’m so thrilled to hear the Downtown Jacket gave you such a positive first experience with PE patterns! It sounds like you put so much care into every detail—from nailing that topstitching (love a good contrast!) to adapting the collar and pockets for your style. There’s something special about a jacket that layers perfectly and feels just right. Enjoy tackling those next PE patterns with all the confidence you've gained! Kate x
