If you've ever wanted to make a pair of barrel leg pants but were nervous about the extreme shaping, these are the pants for you. They’re like wide leg pants and tapered pants had a baby.

All of our patterns are digital pdf sewing pattern.

WATCH THE VIDEO to see what's in this sewing pattern.

  • Softly rounded outer leg shape.
  • Wide leg comfort with gentle ankle taper.
  • Forward side seam.
  • Back leg seam (optional).
  • Wear them plain or add all the options.
  • Front pocket with pocket bag (optional).
  • Side leg pockets (optional).
  • Large back pockets (optional).
  • Pull-on waistband.
  • Mid or high rise.
  • 3 cutting lengths.
  • Topstitching (optional).

WHAT ARE BARREL LEG PANTS LIKE ANYWAY?

  • You feel like you’re wearing wide leg pants - so super comfy & chic.
  • They’re a little rounded along the outside leg - so easy on the thighs & butt.
  • They’re kind of tapered at the ankle - so less volume.
  • Wear them full length or crop them.
  • You may have seen lots of exaggerated, bowed styles - ours are subtle.

WHY WE THINK YOU’LL LOVE THEM?

  • You’ll love how easy they feel on your body.
  • All the comfort of a wide leg, but with a softly tapered ankle that gives shape and keeps the volume feeling intentional.
  • They’re modern without being overly dramatic.
  • An easy, wearable way to try the barrel leg trend and reach for them again and again, no special occasion required.

STYLING YOUR NEW PANTS

WHAT THESE ARE NOT

These are not barrel leg jeans. There’s no fitted upper section, no structured waistband and no knee darts creating that more extreme shape you may have seen.

Instead, this is a softer take on the barrel leg—thanks to a forward-positioned side seam, a gently curved outer leg seam and a subtle taper to the ankle. You can also add more taper if you’d like.

  • Size 4-30 (includes all sizes).
  • View our size chart here.
  • To determine size, measure hip/seat 20cm (8") down from natural waist. See tutorial for more details.
  • View the finished measurements chart here.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS CHART: View the fabric chart.

TRIMS: Elastic for the waistband - 2.5cm (1”) or 4cm (1.5”).

SUPPLIES: Interfacing for the top of side leg & back pockets.

SUITABLE FABRICS:

  • This pattern is designed for woven fabrics with either a little body or drape.
  • It is not suitable for stiff or heavy fabrics (see Fabrics to Avoid below).

FABRICS WITH A LITTLE BODY

  • These fabrics help maintain the shape of the pants without creating too much bulk at the waistband.
  • Examples: Linen, linen/rayon blends, Tencel, rayon or viscose chambray, rayon or viscose twill, tencel twill.

FABRICS WITH DRAPE

  • These fabrics won’t hold the barrel shape as much, but they create a beautiful, comfortable, gorgeous pair of pants. Go see for yourself.
  • Examples: Rayon, viscose.

FABRICS TO AVOID

You may be tempted to use thick fabrics, but thick, bulky or stiff fabrics will give you bulky pants. We strongly recommend avoiding them.

Thicker fabrics, including 100% cotton anything, will make the pants feel bigger.

Stop & think for a moment about a pull on elastic waistband: it needs to be wide enough to pull up over your butt, which naturally means gathers at the waist. Can you see how a thicker fabric will make a bulky waistband, increasing volume at the waist?

These are not the structured barrel leg jeans you may have seen in stores, with fitted waistband & zipped front. Bulky denim, corduroy and other stiff fabrics, in the Making Moves pant, will create too much bulk over the whole pant.

PRINTING YOUR PDF SEWING PATTERNS.

PHONE & TABLET:

As outlined above, if printing the pattern via phone or tablet, use the Sewsy App so you can access the layers & print to the correct scale.

DESKTOP & LAPTOP COMPUTER:

1. Open In Adobe Reader. To use the layers function in a PDF pattern, open the Print-At-Home pattern in Adobe Reader on a laptop or desktop computer. Visit our Help & Resources index for more information on layers.

This function isn't available on the phone or tablet version. As such, some customers recommend the Sewsy apps for layers functionality on a mobile device.

We recommend reading the tutorial off a device, rather than printing it. You can download & read your tutorial on any device.

2. Printer Settings. It's important to select the correct printer settings to ensure your pattern prints to the correct scale. You'll find printer specs in your tutorial &, for more detail, here on the website.

3. Page Printing Guide. You don’t need to print every page or size – just the ones you need. Our guide in the tutorial helps you identify exactly which pages to print.

4. Layout Summary. This shows what your print at home pattern will look like once assembled (taped together).

A0 COPY SHOP PRINTING:

Read the information provided in your tutorial as you may not need to print every page.

We recommend requesting plan printing and following the specs outlined in your tutorial & above (for at home printing). You can find our recommended printing specs on Menu > Help & Resources > Printing or here.

Use a recommended pdf pattern printer if you are new. They will know what to do when you don't. You can find them here or Menu > Help & Resources > Printing.

Printing at a copy shop is always going to be more expensive that printing at home.

See more info in the Help & Resources tab above this one or on the main menu here.
